The application interface will start off with a minimal set of simple functions for phase 1.  In subsequent phases (3 & 4) it will be expanded and possibly redesigned.  Starting with a simple, minimal interface will minimize the complexity of phase 1 while allowing for later changes to be made relatively easily.
